Diamond Valuation
Diamonds are valuated on criteria that is based on the 4 C's, Carat Weight, Color, Clarity and Cut (in this instance meaning shape rather than proportioning). In less obvious, more subtle ways diamonds are also valuated based on their Cut Quality (proportioning), more information on Cut Quality below.

DIAMOND COLOR ON VALUATION
Diamonds are graded on a scale of D thru Z where D is a completely transparent diamond devoid of any color at all and as we move down the color scale toward Z, the diamonds take on more and more of a light yellowish hue. Less color means more rare and that equates to higher valuation.

DIAMOND WEIGHT ON VALUATION
The weight of the diamond plays a major role in valuation. The larger the diamond, the higher the cost per carat for otherwise similar diamonds. It is also important to note that there is a rise in the price per carat at major carat weigh marks. For example, a 0.99 carat diamond should be priced somewhat lower than a 1.00 carat diamond of the same quality, even though there is a single point of carat weight difference between them.

DIAMOND CLARITY ON VALUATION
Clarity is measured on a rather arcane and unique scale with the following terminology in descending order from left to right:

FL - IF - VVS1 - VVS2 - VS1 - VS2 - SI1 - SI2 - I1 - I2

The higher the clarity grade, the more rare and valuable the diamond.
We will discuss Clarity in more detail below.

DIAMOND SHAPE ON VALUATION
There are currently two pricing guides for the wholesale trade, the Round Brilliant price list and the Fancy Shape price list. The prices per carat for every possible combination of weight/color/clarity are higher for Round Brilliant than they are for any other shape. For every other shape, collectively known as the Fancy Shapes which include the Emerald cut, the Oval Brilliant, the Radiant, the Asscher, the Pear Brilliant, the Princess cut the Heart Brilliant and the Marquise, pricing is the same regardless of the shape.

DIAMOND CUT QUALITY ON VALUATION
At this time the GIA only provides a cut quality metric for Round Brilliant diamonds. However, the quality of the proportioning affects the value of every diamond shape. Cut quality, especially relating to fancy shaped diamonds is one of the least understood and most often misrepresented factors of diamond quality.

Imagine if you will that we have two diamonds on hand, they are perfectly identical in their carat weight, color and clarity. The difference between them is the cut quality or proportioning. While one diamond is cut to the most exacting standards of percision with perfect facet alignment, an impeccable shape and a level of brilliance, fire and scintillation commensurate with this cut, the second diamond is cut to maximize the carat weight and it resembles a potato more than a diamond, shows little to no brilliance and is thoroughly unattractive.
The properly proportioned diamond will command a premium relative to the poorly cut diamond (of any shape).

To date, the most comprehensive study of 'fancy shape diamond' cut was conducted by David Atlas and Accredited Gem Appraisers (AGA) and this is the set of guidelines that we employ to evaluate the cut quality of fancy shaped diamonds.
Diamond Carat Weight
This is the easiest of the properties of diamonds to understand as it is an actual scientific measurement of weight. The weight of one carat is equal to 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams. As this is a measure of weight, it is not a measure of size. The size of the diamond is measured in millimeters (mm) and is listed on every GIA certificate. It is often assumed that the higher the carat weight the larger the diamond but when proportioning is taken into full consideration, this may not always be the case.
Diamond Color Grading
Diamonds are graded on a color scale from D thru Z. D color diamonds are completely transparent without even the slightest hint of color in the body of the diamond. This is the highest, rarest and most valuable of the diamond color grades.
D and E color diamonds are virtually identical and even experts have difficulty seeing any difference between them. As we progress down the scale we start to see the lightest imaginable amount of yellowish tinge enter the body of the diamond. Around the color I the diamond takes on a warmer hue to the Brilliance, still appearing colorless when viewed on its own but clearly different when compared directly to a D or E color diamond.

D color and E color diamonds are transparent and very difficult to differentiate between, even for a trained gemologist.

The F color diamond marks the transition between transparent and white. The F color is a colorless diamond that lacks the complete transparency of the D and E colors.
​
The G and H color diamond begin to show some degree of color in the body of the diamond. When viewed on their own they appear colorless from the face up position. When viewed face down the visually acute will see a very light body color in the diamonds.
​
I color and J color diamonds begin to show a warmer hue to their face up appearance. There is an extremely light beige or yellowish color that is perceptable within the body of the diamond.
Diamond Clarity Grades
The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has a clarity grading system consisting of eleven distinct grades which are as follows:

Flawless (FL) No inclusions and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification

Internally Flawless (IF) No inclusions visible under 10x magnification

Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) Inclusions so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification

Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) Inclusions are observed with effort under 10x magnification, but can be characterized as minor

Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification

Included (I1, I2, and I3) Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification which may affect transparency and brilliance

Once again it is important to note that the actual grading of diamonds is a subjective activity performed by human beings. There is a fairly substantial range of the severity of imperfections that can happen in mid to low level clarity diamonds (VS1-SI2).

It is also important to note that at Icestore we do not deal in diamonds with clarity levels below SI2 and therefore we won't get into any detail regarding the characteristics of these grades other than to say that in our opinion you would be much better served getting a smaller, higher quality diamond, than you would be getting a larger but obviously included diamond.
FLAWLESS (FL)
The FL (Flawless) diamond clarity grade is the epitome of perfection in the diamond world. It represents the highest level of clarity, as these diamonds are completely free from any internal or external flaws.
